Office 365 Announcement to Students

Current information:

Student email accounts have been successfully transitioned to Office 365. Thank you for your patience during this critical period.

You can now log in to your email via the web at webmail.umb.edu (the same address as before) but when you click LOG ON, you will see a new login page with the UMass Boston logo. This is normal. Log in with your email address and password (neither one changed) and you should have access to your email.

If you are using an email program or mobile device to check your email and it is not working, we have a web page that will walk you through setting up your device and finding the server addresses for your mailbox. To see these instructions, visit:

Third Announcement:

Posted August 14, 2012

Student email accounts will be migrated to Office 365 on Wednesday, August 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (approximately). We anticipate this will take approximately four hours, but check the IT Status page for updates.

During this time, the email system for students will be unavailable, and students will not be able to log in to web mail or send or receive mail on computers or mobile devices. Mail sent to student addresses during this time will not be lost, but rather queued and delivered once the system is available again.

Please note that this outage only affects student email. You will be able to log in to and use WISER and Blackboard during this transition.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but it was important to finish this part of the Office 365 transition before the beginning of the fall semester.

To all UMass Boston students:

NEXT WEEK,  your email account with UMass Boston will move to the new Office 365 system. This will have several benefits to both you and the University. It is important that you read and understand this message so that you will continue to have access to your email without interruption.

Your email address and password will not change, but you will get a larger mailbox. You can access your email via the web by clicking the Student Web Mail Login link on our web site: https://www.umb.edu/it/getting_services/email/

Before the upgrade, here is what you need to do:

  • If you are using Internet Explorer 6, upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer. We suggest you upgrade to IE 9 if your system will run it.
  • Check your computer’s operating system and browser to make sure they are up to date here: http://www.umb.edu/scanmypc
  • To use full Outlook for the PC, you must be using Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010.
  • To use full Outlook for the Mac, you must be using Outlook 2011.
  • Setup instructions for other mail clients, including mobile devices, can be found here: https://www.umb.edu/it/getting_services/email/student_email_device

Notice of Upcoming Change to the UMass Boston Student Email System

To all UMass Boston students:

Over the summer your email account with UMass Boston will move to the new Office 365 system. This will have several benefits to both you and the University. It is important that you read and understand these messages so that you will continue to have access to your email without interruption.

We will provide more details in an upcoming email.

Before the upgrade, what you need to do:

  • If you are using Internet Explorer 6, upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer
  • If you are using Outlook 2003 to access email, upgrade to Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010.
  • If you are using Outlook 2002 or Outlook 2004 for the Mac, upgrade to Outlook 2008 or higher.

A few things will not change:

  • Your email address will not change
  • The webmail login (webmail.umb.edu) will not change

A few things will change:

  • Your email quota will increase from 10G to 25G
  • Access via mobile device or POP/IMAP application will need reconfiguration.
  • Password changes with the Microsoft site will not work. You must use spmt.umb.edu.
  • If you currently use SkyDrive, bookmark this URL for future access: https://skydrive.live.com/
