  • Congratulations to Joiner intern Tony Martin. "The Mission Continues, a nonprofit organization that trains and redeploys veterans in their communities, has awarded UMass Boston student veteran Tony Martin ’19 a $1,500 grant through its Service Leadership Corps to support My Brother’s Keeper Boston in its COVID-19 response this summer. President Barack Obama launched the My Brother's Keeper initiative in 2014 to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color and ensure that all young people can reach their full potential.   • Two Essays on Racism by Writers' Workshop Faculty, reflections inspired by recent protests for racial justice in the U.S. Our Racism is a Hydra, by Joiner Writers' Workshop faculty member, former Boston Poet Laureate, and Lesley Professor Danielle Legros Georges. (6/5/20). Sean Davis, Iraq War Army veteran, professor, author, and veteran activist from Portland, Oregon recently published There Comes a Time When Silence Is a Betrayal (6/18/20).

  • The Joiner Institute has postponed the rest of our Veteran Film Series due to campus closure. Stay tuned for new screening dates in Fall 2020. Featuring three films and documentaries that explore what happens after war. All screenings will feature talk backs with veterans, filmmakers and other panelists. Free admission to all screenings.

  • Postponed On April 7th, Joiner friend Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai reads from her new novel about Vietnam, The Mountains Sing at the Brookline Booksmith Translation Series
     
  • It was an honor to host Vietnam combat veteran and Zen Buddhist Monk Claude Anshin Thomas at UMass Boston on March 4th. Check out the Zaltho Foundation for more information about how Anshin helps veterans and caregivers through meditation practice.
