Men's Team Tips Off at 5:30 p.m. vs. Suffolk; Women Follow at 7:30
The University of Massachusetts Boston basketball teams will play their first doubleheader of the season in the newly renovated Clark Center Gymnasium today.
The men’s basketball team (3-2) will tip off at 5:30 p.m. against Suffolk University. The women’s team (3-0) will host Suffolk at 7:30 p.m.
Tonight’s game will be the first home contest for the lady Beacons since the gym re-opened last week. The men’s team hosted the Harbor Invitational Tournament last weekend, winning the tourney for the first time since 2005.
The gym closed in March for renovations, which include a new maple hardwood floor that provides athletes with shock absorption, updated bleachers, lighting improvements, and Wi-Fi.
“We are thrilled to have our home court back, and we hope that students and the community will come out, see the changes, and support the teams,” said Charlie Titus, vice chancellor for athletics and recreation, special projects, and intramurals and men’s basketball head coach.
Both teams are off to strong starts. The women’s team has started 3-0 for the first time since 2001. And the men’s Harbor Invitational title has given the team a huge confidence boost, Titus said.
“Our conference is tough. On any given night, anybody can win in our conference. So we recognize that going in, but we certainly feel this is not last year or the year before. We’re going to have to be reckoned with in the conference this year,” he said.
Students who attend Thursday’s games will be entered in a raffle for two Celtics tickets and two passes to the New England Aquarium. Students who attend both games and wear “Bleed Blue” T-shirts will receive additional raffle tickets.
A formal grand opening is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5.
