Friends of Nantucket Field Station
Help us create a world-class research and education facility
Your support of the Nantucket Field Station provides opportunities for people of all ages to explore and celebrate Nantucket’s unique island habitats and ecosystems. Join the Friends of Nantucket Field Station today by making a gift which supports:
NFS's education and outreach programs, conducted by Field Station staff affiliated with UMass Boston and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, bring the riches of studying Nantucket’s unique habitats and ecosystems to 5,000 visitors a year. Resources are needed for:
- teaching, curriculum development and "hands-on" learning materials.
Nantucket's distinctive conditions and natural resources provide a robust environment to explore maritime ecology. Undergraduates, graduate students, and scientists study a plethora of topics ranging from the reintroduction of endangered species and determining the population and genetic makeup of gray seals, to evaluating underground and surface water quality and uncovering the archaeology of the island’s Wampanoag population. Resources are needed to:
- upgrade and maintain laboratories;
- purchase research equipment;
- provide seed money to pioneer new studies; and
- offer stipends for student researchers.
Funds are also sought for programs associated with the newly formed Nantucket Research Institute.
UMass Boston has committed $1 million to upgrading the Station's four structures. Additionally, the University of Massachusetts Foundation, Inc. has agreed to provide another $1 million to support the NFS's research programs including endowments if private donors contribute $1 million in matching funds. Your gift can help us meet this challenge. Resources are needed for:
- upgrading the station's equipment and renovating buildings to create flexible spaces, while incorporating green technology.
The Friends of Nantucket Field Station invite donors to consider naming opportunities for gifts of $10,000 or more for the station's facilities renovation and endowment gifts of $25,000 or more to support research and programs.
