Beacons Sports: Two Beacons Join 1,000 Point Club

Two UMass Boston Beacons joined the 1,000 point club this fall. 

Kirsten Morrison Is Seventh to Reach 1,000 Points for Women’s Basketball

Senior Kirsten Morrison of North Reading became the seventh player in program history to score 1,000 points on November 22. Other highlights at the midway point of the season include LEC Player of the Week honors for junior Olivia Murphy of Canton and LEC Rookie of the Week honors for freshman Grace Geary of Falmouth. Geary and the Beacons will return to action on Tuesday when they host Brandeis University at 5:30 p.m.

Carl Joseph Joins 1,000-Point Club for Men’s Basketball

Men’s basketball captain Carl Joseph, a senior from Brockton, scored his 1,000th career point on December 13. He’s the twelfth player in UMass Boston history to reach this milestone, and the first since Amigo Paniagua '08. The Beacons return to action on Tuesday when they host Framingham State University at 7:30 p.m. On December 11, Joseph was named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week. Junior transfer student Karl Agenor of Dorchester has also earned that honor this season. Both players have also earned Little East Conference Player of the Week honors.

Beacons Host Indoor Open

At their third Indoor Open on December 6, UMass Boston junior and All-American Hulerie McGuffie recorded the top Division III times in the 200- and 500-meter dashes, and second-best times overall. Senior Tylor Hart of Newton recorded a No. 2 finish in the high jump with the fourth-best jump in his college career—6-06.75 feet. The track and field team will return to action on January 10 when they compete in the Roxbury Community College Tiger All-Comers meet at the Reggie Lewis Center.

UMass Boston Fall Athletes Get Regional Recognition

Senior soccer player Krista Ledin of Bridgewater was the only LEC player named to the ECAC New England Division III All-Star Team. The men’s soccer team had three players named to the second team. Sophomore Pedro De Carvalho of Praia, Cape Verde, junior Pedro Dasilva of Fogo, Cape Verde, and senior Douglas Silveira of Revere were all named ECAC Division III New England All-Stars.

Sophomore volleyball player Elizabeth Glavan of Edina, Minnesota was named the 2014 ECAC Division III New England Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Star. Sophomore Julia Murphy of Canton was named to the second team.
