Welcome Week Activities Include 50-Foot Birthday Cake for University’s 50th Anniversary

Chancellor J. Keith Motley welcomed the largest freshmen class in UMass Boston history when classes began September 2. The chancellor held his annual meet-and-greet in the Campus Center on the first morning of classes, and also recorded a video message.

More than 1,500 freshmen from 27 states and 46 countries started classes this year, bringing the total student population up to nearly 17,000. Many of those freshmen took part in Welcome Week activities, including the university’s freshmen investiture ceremony, at which New York Times bestselling author Wes Moore talked to students about making an impact beyond the classroom. Another highlight was the Student Arts and Events Council-sponsored 50th birthday bash, complete with a 50-foot-long birthday cake. The week ended with convocation, a day of service, a barbecue, and movies under the stars.
