On November 5, Collaborative Institute Executive Director Robbin Peach attended the Panetta Institute for Public Policy’s twelfth annual Jefferson-Lincoln Awards in Pebble Beach, California, as a guest of Michael Sutton, vice president and director of the Center for the Future of the Oceans at Monterey Bay Aquarium. The awards ceremony honors policymakers and journalists whose work “best exemplifies public service and dedicated effort on behalf of the greatness of our nation.” The 2011 honorees were former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, former Office of Management and Budget Director Alice Rivlin and CNN lead political anchor Wolf Blitzer.
At the event, Peach had the opportunity to speak with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta about the Collaborative Institute, its mission, and areas of mutual concern. She has also extended an invitation to Secretary Panetta to be a keynote speaker at the Global Conference for Oceans, Climate and Security in May 2012. Let’s hope he can join us to articulate with authority the interdependent connections between national security and climate-induced changes in our oceans and coastal communities.
