As ironworkers near the end of assembling the structural steel for General Academic Building No. 1 (GAB No. 1), UMass Boston will celebrate the milestone with a "topping off" event on Wednesday, April 30, at 1 p.m. at the Campus Center Terrace.

The topping off of a construction project is a ceremonial event marking the end of steel construction by putting into place a final, signed beam. The campus community is invited to stop by and sign the steel beam between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The white beam is set up under a tent outside the construction site off the Campus Center circle.

For those who want to stay inside for the beam-raising ceremony, view it on the top construction webcam.

GAB No. 1, the second new academic facility in the master plan, will add innovative classrooms and specialized instructional spaces featuring 26 general-use classrooms, art, dance, and music studios, chemistry teaching labs, a theater, recital hall, café, student lounge and study spaces. The building is scheduled to open in fall 2015.
