Officers in UMass Boston's Department of Public Safety, members of UMass Boston's chapter of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for First-Year Students, and the Office of Community Relations took part in the Boston Police Athletic League's Shop with a Cop: Heroes and Helpers 2015 event on Monday. This is the fourth year UMass Boston has worked with the Boston Police Department to serve underserved youth from across the entire city. Representatives from the City of Boston Emergency Medical Services also took part.

The event started with a pizza party at the Leahy-Holloran Community Center in Dorchester. From there, children had a police escort to Target in the South Bay Mall, where they shopped with officers using donated gift certificates.

The goal of this holiday initiative is to improve self-esteem of the city youth. This effort provides these young students with an opportunity to purchase presents for their friends and family. In addition, this initiative is a great opportunity to foster improved relationships between youth and police by providing a positive environment for fun, social interaction.
