The Week in Beacons Sports: Men’s, Women’s Hockey Victorious on Senior Day

The University of Massachusetts Boston women’s hockey team (10-9-4) upset Holy Cross on Senior Day, 3-2. Alyssa Sullivan, Samantha Fallon, and Emily Russell each scored for the Beacons. The Beacons will be on the road Friday night at Plymouth State University.

Men’s Ice Hockey
The Beacons (16-4-3) won both games this week, including their Senior Day game against the University of New England. Senior Travis Daniel of North Brunswick, New Jersey had the game-winner. Daniel has scored 11 decisive goals in his Beacons career, tying the program record. UMass Boston travels to St. Michael’s College on Friday.

Track and Field
Junior Tylor Hart matched his own program record in the high jump (6-08.25 feet) at the 2014 Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday, earning him second place. The men’s team finished the tournament with nine personal bests. Sophomore Hulerie McGuffie broke her record (25.24 seconds) in the 200-meter dash and finished in 24th place. The team will complete in the Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championship meet on Saturday.

Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team (6-15) picked up a win this week against Fitchburg State University. Junior Carl Joseph of Brockton led the team with 24 points. The Beacons travel to UMass Dartmouth tonight for a 7:30 tip.

Women’s Basketball
UMass Boston (12-8) picked up a nonconference win against Suffolk University this week, but lost to conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University. Freshman Mallory Nelson of Topsham, Maine, led the Beacons with a career-high 14 points against ECSU. The women will play as part of the doubleheader at UMass Dartmouth tonight. The game starts at 5:30 p.m.
