The Week in Beacons Sports: Relay Teams Post Top Times at Stampede Classic

The UMass Boston men's and women's 4x200 relay teams took first and second place, respectively, at the Tufts University Stampede Classic on Saturday. The men’s team of Fritz Gustave, Nobert Simon, Kelly Desane, and Shawn Lawson crossed the finish line in 1:34.59, a mere hundredth of a second away from matching the program record. Track and Field is back in action Saturday for the Boston University Valentine Invite.

Men’s Ice Hockey
The Beacons (14-4-3) were 1-0-1 in a week that included a 5-1 win over Castleton State College. Stephen Buco, Kit Sitterley, and Frankie DeAugustine each recorded a goal and an assist. Two conference games are on tap for this week, beginning with a home game against the University of Southern Maine Friday at 7 p.m.

Women’s Ice Hockey
The women’s hockey team (9-8-4) is now in eighth place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East. Samantha Fallon, a sophomore from Pembroke, scored for the Beacons in their 1-1 tie against Manhattanville College.

Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team (5-14) lost two close games this week. The Beacons lost 70-65 to Rhode Island College despite erasing a 22-point deficit late in the second half. They will be back at it Thursday at 7 p.m. against Fitchburg State University.

Women’s Basketball
UMass Boston (11-8) will look to end a three-game losing streak tonight at 7 against Suffolk University. The Beacons dropped games this week to conference foes Rhode Island College and the University of Southern Maine.
