Theatre Arts Announces “Polaroid Stories” Auditions, Open Call, and 2016-2017 Season

It is mortals and gods trying to work together to solve the problems of mankind, but as teenagers in 2015.

The Theatre Arts Department announces an open call audition for the spring production, Naomi Iizuka’s celebrated 1997 drama Polaroid Stories, and the titles for the 2016-2017 season. Director Carrie Ann Quinn, Associate Chair of Performing Arts, selected Polaroid Stories as a unique opportunity to seriously explore Greek mythology through the modern lens of teenage runaways telling stories.

The play has roles for five men and five women as written, though some additional roles may be added.

Polaroid Stories is like looking at mythological stories, and figuring out what the modern day equivalent would be,” Quinn says. “It is mortals and gods trying to work together to solve the problems of mankind, but as teenagers in 2015.”

Central to Quinn is exploring a play that presents academic challenges, but also asks actors to dig deep to explore character, define contemporary issues and, ultimately, to move an audience. Quinn will use music, movement, and dance throughout the play to weave together the many intersecting stories.

Auditions for Polaroid Stories will be held at the McCormack Theatre, February 9 and 10, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with callbacks on February 11 at 6 p.m. Those wishing to audition should come prepared with a one-minute dramatic monologue and “an incredible true story about yourself.”

“True or not,” Quinn said, “convince me it’s true."

Looking ahead, plans are underway for the 2016-17 season. The fall musical, Bat Boy: The Musical, centers on a half-boy, half-bat, ripped from the pages of the Weekly World News, directed by Quinn. New Voices, New Stories: Student Playwright Readings features the best of UMass Boston’s emerging playwrights, directed by Robert Lublin and dramaturgy by Ginger Lazarus. Spring 2017 brings The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare, directed by Danny Gidron.
