UMass Boston Chancellor Elected to Lead Carney Hospital’s Board of Trustees

The Carney Hospital Board of Trustees has announced the election of J. Keith Motley, PhD as chairman of the 16-member hospital board.

The eighth chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston, Motley has championed several significant developments since his appointment to his post in 2007, including the management of a 25-year master plan for the development of the university’s physical plant, a 200% increase in private development funding, a 15% increase in student enrollment, and significant increases in faculty research funding.

Beyond his extensive experience as a nationally recognized leader in higher education, Chancellor Motley is a founder of the Roxbury Preparatory Charter School and chair emeritus of the school’s board of trustees. He is also a founder and education chair of Concerned Black Men of Massachusetts, Inc. and the Paul Robeson Institute for Positive Self-Development, an academic and social enrichment program for school-aged children of color.

“We all have the greatest appreciation for Keith’s commitment to the University of Massachusetts system and his work at UMass Boston,” said Carney Hospital President Bill Walczak. “His vision for community engagement and development reflects exactly the kind of leadership that I look forward to drawing upon as we re-establish Carney Hospital as a great community resource for Dorchester and the surrounding communities.”

“I’m honored by this appointment to lead the Board of Trustees of Carney Hospital,” said Chancellor Motley. “Carney has a special place among community-serving organizations in Dorchester, and I look forward to working closely with Bill in strengthening its role and presence in the Boston area.”

Chancellor Motley’s term as chairman of the Carney Hospital Board of Trustees began on June 2, 2011. In his capacity as chairman, Chancellor Motley will work with the hospital’s senior leadership and board of trustees to develop a comprehensive marketing and communications plan, as well as establish new markets for the hospital.
