Benefit to Establish New Scholarship for Boston Students

The University of Massachusetts Boston will honor community advocate Peter J. Berlandi on April 30 at its 8th Annual Scholarship Gala, an evening benefit that has raised more than $500,000 for a new scholarship for students from the metropolitan Boston area.  Nearly 600 people are expected to fill the university's Campus Center for the event, the most successful fundraiser in the university’s history.

Berlandi, a 1969 graduate of Boston State College, a university predecessor institution, and a former University of Massachusetts trustee, has been a key advisor to Massachusetts politicians who have coveted his business knowledge, political acumen, and fundraising skills. Less well known are Berlandi’s efforts to support young people through teaching and mentoring programs.

Chancellor J. Keith Motley will present Berlandi with the Chancellor's Medal for Exemplary Leadership — the university's highest honor. He will be the first Boston State College alumni recipient.

“With a distinguished record of civic engagement, Peter J. Berlandi is truly an exemplar of the public purpose of higher education,” Chancellor Motley said “The ‘education for service’ legacy he represents is one of the most powerful strands of UMass Boston’s identity.”

Guests include Gala Chair former Governor William Weld, University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees Chair James Karam, and UMass President Robert Caret. Gala Host Committee members include Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Robert E. Travaglini, both of whom are UMass Boston alumni, former Attorney General Francis Bellotti, and former University of Massachusetts Trustee Chair Robert Karam will join them.

UMass Boston 2011 alumna Lillian O’Flaherty, a Boston Globe Honors Scholar as an undergraduate and now a teacher at the Boston International School, will offer remarks on the profound impact of her scholarship. A product of the Boston Public Schools, she will be the type of student who will receive the new Peter and Jackie Berlandi Scholarship.

“The Berlandi Scholarship will help ensure that Peter’s legacy of public participation, teaching and mentoring, and devotion to our city and commonwealth will enliven UMass Boston’s mission in perpetuity,” said Gala Committee Vice Chair Robert Karam.
