Translating Theory to Practice

A discussion with Joe-Ann Fergus, RN, BSN, MA, PhDc

Joe-Ann Fergus was already working as a nurse when she enrolled in the Conflict Resolution Master’s program here at UMass Boston. After completing the program in 2000, she took what she learned and went to work for the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the largest union and professional association of registered nurses and health professionals in the state, representing more than 23,000 members working in 85 health care facilities.

She has worked in collective bargaining and negotiating grievances, and currently heads the division that deals with a wide range of member issues. In addition, she is currently pursuing a PhD in Health Policy through UMass Boston's College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
