Sonali Deraniyagala teaches in the Department of Economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, located at the University of London. She has published extensively in the areas of manufacturing productivity in low income countries, macroeconomic policy and poverty reduction, and the economics of civil war in developing countries. She is currently a visiting research scholar at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), working on aspects of post-disaster economic recovery.
