A season of celebrations
May 06, 2011
J. Keith Motley, PhD, UMass Boston Chancellor
As we head into the final week of classes, there is excitement in the air for the celebrations that mark the end of the academic year.
Next Tuesday at 2 p.m. on the Campus Center 1st Floor Terrace I will host the annual Chancellor’s Achievement Awards ceremony and ice cream social. I look forward to this chance to honor the hard work of our dedicated staff and to announce our standout award winners and nominees. I am particularly pleased that our new UMass president, Robert Caret, will join us for the celebration.
I’ll also be at the UMBY Awards next week to celebrate our amazing student-athletes and their academic achievements. And as a great finish to the week, the Bayside Block Party is on for Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’ll have barbeque, mini golf, live music, and more. I hope I’ll see you there.
Finally, the biggest celebration of all is just around the corner. We’re well into another memorable commencement season – our 43rd – at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Each year, our faculty and staff help make commencement truly memorable for our students and their families. If you don’t already have a role this year, I hope we can count on your help again this year on Friday, June 3 – and make Commencement 2011 the special and touching occasion our graduates and their loved ones deserve.
Please watch for an announcement next week describing how you can participate on that day and more about the ceremony itself, including speakers, honorary degree recipients, and Chancellor’s Medal awardees.
