Progress on new academic building

J. Keith Motley, PhD, UMass Boston Chancellor | March 25, 2011

I’m pleased to announce an important progression toward our Master Plan goals: Wilson Architects has been selected to design our new General Academic Building.

The facility, which is slated to open in 2014, will be built on Master Plan Site O (currently the Beacons Parking Lot), and its location will define and frame the new Central Quad, serving as the intersection of new pedestrian pathways. The building will feature state-of-the-art classrooms, specialized teaching spaces, as well as lounge and study spaces for the entire campus community – and it will also include new homes for several academic programs.

Wilson Architects is a Boston-based firm that specializes in academic building design, with extensive experience and understanding of the technology requirements for 21st-century learning environments. The firm has recently completed successful academic building projects at Duke University, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and the University of Chicago, and I look forward to their work here.
