UMass Boston at 50

Chancellor J. Keith Motley celebrated UMass Boston's 50th anniversary at the UMass Boston Birthday Block Party on June 18, 1964 by signing a giant birthday card.

Birthday Block Party

Hundreds of alumni, students, faculty, staff, and community members turned out for the UMass Boston Birthday Block Party on June 18, 2014.

On June 18, 1964, Governor Endicott Peabody signed the legislation that established the University of Massachusetts Boston as the second undergraduate campus in the UMass system. This June 18 the university community and neighbors marked that signing with a block party and by doing some signing of their own—signing an extra large birthday card. That card, now covered with signatures, will be taken to other 50th events and eventually put into the University Archives and Special Collections.
