UMass Boston at 50

UMass Boston's first home was in the former Boston Gas Company headquarters in Park Square.

The University of Massachusetts Boston opened its doors on September 9, 1965 in the former Boston Gas Company headquarters on Stuart Street in Park Square. The charter class of 1,000 students was supported by 200 faculty. On November 22, 1968, UMass trustees voted 14-4 to move the university to Columbia Point in Dorchester.
