University Health Services does not provide verification of illness (sick notes). It is imperative that students with any symptoms of acute illness refrain from attending classes for the health and safety of the campus. Students should not be required to visit University Health Services except as needed to care for their illness, and should not be directed to any medical care facility for the purpose of obtaining a verification note.

"What is the policy regarding medical excuse notes?"

UHS does not provide individual "notes" for students to give to professors regarding their personal health information.

When a student is ill, our staff may encourage that student to avoid going to class. In the event that our staff encourages a student to avoid class, University Health Services will encourage the students to get in touch with professors directly, to alert them to the change in their health status.

"How can I provide verification of illness to a professor?"

Often, a professor will ask for verification of illness from UHS. UHS does not give individual "sick notes" to professors. Students should NOT schedule an appointment to be seen by University Health Services to "document" an illness because they have missed or are missing a class or assignment, or to request a note. Appointments at UHS are in high demand during the semester and are reserved for students who need to be seen.

If the student is seriously ill, we will provide a confidential email to the Dean of Students Office to alert the need for a medical absence. The Dean of Students has helpful resources in regard to communicating with faculty and helping students access other resources.

Before You Get Sick

Familiarize yourself with the attendance policy for each of your courses. Attendance policies for each course are determined by the course professor. It is your responsibility to be in direct communication with your professors in advance regarding any course requirements, including attendance.
