Beth Kaplin
Biography
Beth Kaplin is a biodiversity conservation scientist and tropical ecologist with experience in Rwanda, Uganda, Central Africa Republic, DRC, Burundi and Costa Rica. From 2017-2023 she served as the first director of the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity & Natl Res Mgmt at University of Rwanda. In 2023 she won the Frankfurt Conservation Award from the Bruno Schubert-Foundation for contributions to applied research. She is currently involved in ecosystem restoration in Indonesia.
Area of Expertise
My areas of expertise are in seed dispersal ecology, tropical forest ecology, primate ecology and conservation, biodiversity, ecological function and services, impacts of climate change, restoration ecology, climate adaptation and nature-based solutions, human-wildlife conflicts, agroforestry, agro-ecological systems, and protected areas management. I have recently been working with biodiversity information systems as tools for early detection of environmental change, and approaches to monitor and manage landscapes for human wellbeing and biodiversity conservation in the face of climate change. This includes agricultural landscapes, linkages with ecosystem functioning, and ways to integrate biodiversity into multifunctional working landscapes.

I have devoted a large part of my career to building research capacity in Rwanda, although I have also worked in many other countries in Africa and globally. In addition to research, I am a passionate educator and supervise undergraduate, master’s and PhD students from many different institutions and countries. I received MacArthur Foundation grants from 2006-2014 to develop the first conservation biology programs at National University of Rwanda for undergraduate and Master’ students; these programs are still running today and hundreds of students have benefited, many are in governmental and non-governmental positions, or studying for PhDs in Europe and North America. I have extensive international networks developed over three decades of international work spanning academia, civil society, and the private sector, and I am passionate about connecting people, ideas, and projects. I recently stepped down as the founding director of the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management hosted at University of Rwanda (2017-2023). I successfully launched this new transdisciplinary research institution from the ground up, developing the systems for the Center to function efficiently, successfully guided it through the application process for UNESCO Category 2 Center status which was achieved in 2022, developed international networks for the Center, and raised funds to enable the Center to deliver data products including the Rwanda Biodiversity Information System and the country’s first Spatial Biodiversity Assessment. I have had the opportunity to build skills in leadership, science-policy linkages, research capacity building, innovation, and international partnerships. I also spent 20 years teaching in an environmental studies graduate program at Antioch University New England, USA, where I served as PhD program director, developed curriculum, and founded a Center for Tropical Ecology & Conservation. I am an Adjunct Professor in the School for the Environment at UMB. I am currently involved in ecosystem restoration in Sumatra, Indonesia. I also recently started the Legacy Tree Project in Rwanda with Rwandan colleagues to document the remaining large native trees in the working landscapes of the country to protect ecological and cultural legacies.

Additional Information
As a conservation scientist, Beth Kaplin is interested in the relationship between biodiversity, humans and the maintenance of ecosystem functioning. Humans rely on ecosystems for life support. One of the greatest challenges facing humans today is the loss of biodiversity, and with it the support system humans rely on.
Kaplin's interests revolve around how species, as elements of biodiversity, support ecological processes, and how these processes interact with human activities on the landscape. Much of her work and that of her students is focused in the Albertine Rift in east and central Africa, a region of isolated tropical montane forest islands possessing extremely high biodiversity, a rich evolutionary history, very high human population densities, and a history of colonialism which has influenced the regions ability to effectively manage its landscapes and biodiversity. Her main study site is the Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda, where she has worked since 1990.
