Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP)
UMass Boston Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP) evaluates, protects and commercializes inventions and discoveries created by faculty, staff and students. CVIP also handles questions about copyright, material transfer, and confidential disclosure agreements.

E-Verify is an internet-based system operated jointly by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). E-Verify, authorized by Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA), is a web-based system through which employers electronically confirm the employment eligibility of their employees.
The e-Verify federal contractor rule requires contractor commitment to use e-Verify to confirm that all employees assigned to a federal contract are authorized to work in the United States.

The University of Massachusetts is a governmental unit and as such is exempt from tax under the doctrine of implied statutory immunity either as a political subdivision or as an integral part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The University qualifies as a public charity eligible to receive charitable contributions under Section 170(b)(1)(A)(ii). Under this section, the IRS defines an Educational Institution and it includes Federal, State, and other public-supported schools.
Therefore, grants and donations to UMass for public purpose are considered charitable donations and as such may be deductible against taxable income.

The University of Massachusetts is governed by a 22-member Board of Trustees that represents various interests of the public at large on a non-partisan basis. Seventeen members of the board are appointed by the Governor and five members are UMass students elected by the student body on each of the five campuses.
Each campus develops procedures for implementing the policies and standards put in place by the UMass Board of Trustees and President. These campus procedures are designed to comply with the requirements of University standards by establishing specific criteria that must be met by University students, staff, consultants, etc. The policy linked below governs externally sponsored programs.
Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT)
It is the policy of the University to comply with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations, which includes filing IRS Form 990-T for Unrelated Business Income Taxes (UBIT). Therefore, all unrelated business income and expenses carried on by the University will be properly distributed and recorded in the revenue and expense accounts assigned to the unrelated business activity to determine federal UBIT. This must be completed in accordance with the annual tax calendar.
