In partnership with Boston Public High School, UMass Boston offers Early College opportunities, through which BPHS students can earn college credits for free.

  • In Massachusetts-designated Early College programs, students will complete at least 12 credits in their early college experience.
  • Students can earn at least 18 credits (and up to 31 credits) at UMass Boston.
  • Choose from two different pathways: Healthcare/STEM and Education.
  • A majority of courses in these areas are in general education, which have maximum transferability.
  • Classes are taught by university faculty and are offered at the high school and on campus.

Students Learn from University Faculty Starting in 10th Grade

Students from partner schools can participate in Early College. University faculty will teach classes at the students' high school, so classes are integrated into their daily schedules. Students can join Early College through multiple on-ramps, as long as they can earn 12 credits by graduation. During a student’s junior year, and based on the partner school, students will begin taking college classes on campus, either in the fall or spring. In their senior year, Early College students take classes with matriculated UMass Boston students, on campus, further enhancing their collegiate exposure and experience.

Participate in Integrated Early Classes in High School

UMass Boston’s Early College program is free to students and families. The program provides enhanced academic support and guidance, including built-in support blocks where UMass Boston tutor-mentors work with students in their high school classrooms. To build students’ college navigational skills and provide meaningful and intentional support, UMass Boston advisors also work with students, in groups and one-on-one, to give academic and career support. All of our Early College support systems come together to deepen students’ sense of belonging and further students’ collegiate success.
