About College of Advancing and Professional Studies (CAPS) Courses

Some UMass Boston courses are offered through the College of Advancing and Professional Studies (CAPS). CAPS course costs differ somewhat from those shown in this chart, and CAPS courses are charged separately. Any questions please contact CAPS: Tel (617) 287.7900 or caps@umb.edu.

Certificate Students

Tuition, fees, and billing procedures for certificate students are the same as for matriculated students, unless otherwise noted.

Description of Fees

The Board of Higher Education and the University Board of Trustees determine all charges.

Application Fee
Each application for admission to the university from a student seeking a degree must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee payment of $60(UG)/64(Grad) for domestic applicants, $100(UG)/$107(Grad) for international applicants. Checks should be made payable to The University of Massachusetts Boston, and submitted together with completed application forms.

Tuition (In-State Rate)
As a state institution, the University of Massachusetts Boston offers a low rate of tuition to all students entering from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Eligibility for admission under the low residential rate is determined according to a policy established by the Board of Trustees and detailed under the residency status section.

Non-state-supported courses
Due to budget reductions the campus is now offering many sections of courses as NonState supported courses. The fee for these courses will be equivalent to what is charged for students in a state funded course, but will appear on the bill as a separate line item charge.

Combined Mandatory Fees
Provides funding for student services on campus.  Applicable to all students.  This fee is a one line item charged on a per-credit basis.

Educational Operations Fee
The Educational Operations Fee provides funds for the goods and services needed to run a university.  Employed students seeking employer reimbursement for this fee can obtain from the Bursar's Office or in person at the One Stop Student Center a "support letter" describing the need for the fee and how the proceeds are used much as tuition would be at a private institution.

Students who are at least 75% of the full time curriculum are automatically billed for the SHP.  Please note, the following does not meet the state criteria for “comparable” insurance coverage:

Ø Foreign (international) health insurance coverage.

Ø Mass Health Limited

ØHealth Safety Net

ØChildren’s Medical Security Plan

Please note all students must complete the Health Insurance Waiver Online. Failure to complete the Health Insurance Waiver online will result in non-waivable late payment fees.   Deadline to waive Health Insurance is posted on the top right of the page. Program Fee

Each degree-seeking graduate student is required to maintain continuous registration until the degree that the student is seeking has been formally awarded. If a graduate student does not register for course, thesis, or dissertation credits during any semester, the student must pay a program fee to maintain continuous registration. The program fee for all students is $216.00 per semester and is paid to the One Stop Student Center. Note: Payment of the program fee does not extend the time limit for completion of the degree. Any questions regarding the program fee should go through the One Stop Student Center.

Tuition Surcharge for Credit Hours in Excess of Degree Requirements

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education requires all universities and state colleges to assess a tuition surcharge to students who exceed 118 percent of required credits in an academic degree program. This surcharge applies to in-state undergraduates and students enrolled through the New England Regional Exchange Program and is equal to the non-resident tuition rate per credit.

  1. Students who transferred to UMass Boston are exempt.
  2. Transfer credits completed after enrolling at UMass Boston are excluded from the total of credits earned.
  3. Credits earned for programs requiring more than 120 credits are excluded. For further information, contact the Registrar's Office at 617-287-6200.

Cost of Attendance

A budget for the cost of study at UMass Boston may be compared to any general budget, such as a household or personal budget. Within that budget, a number of factors may change due to rising labor costs, changes in the costs of goods and services, and other influences.

When individual applications for financial aid are considered, the university uses a sample institutional budget estimating the average cost of attendance. Copies of this sample budget are available from Financial Aid Services.
