Financial Aid
You can use financial aid to study abroad.
See the chart below for Semester/Year-Long programs. For questions about summer or winter financial aid options & eligibility, please contact finaidstudyabroad@umb.edu.
Planning:
- Be sure to contact finaidstudyabroad@umb.edu to understand how your financial aid can be used to study abroad on an exchange versus provider/direct enroll program.
- Once you have an idea of which program you would like to attend, use this Study Abroad Financial Planning Worksheet & contact finaidstudyabroad@umb.edu to fill out the bottom section of the form. This will help you determine how much financial aid you can expect to receive for your selected program, versus the total costs. If you need assistance filling out costs, first check the program brochure. If you still have questions, contact studyabroad@umb.edu.
- If you are receiving any type of financial aid (i.e. grants, loans, scholarships), you must inform the financial aid office of your intent to study abroad and submit the required documents (below). Contact finaidstudyabroad@umb.edu for all study abroad financial aid questions.

Important Information:
- Financial aid won't be disbursed until after your enrollment verification has been confirmed by the Host Institution and signed. This will occur AFTER you are abroad. You will need to cover your study abroad expenses out of pocket until that time.
- The financial aid office can issue a letter for you stating the estimated financial aid for the upcoming semester abroad. This may be submitted to your program to see if they are able to wait for payment of your tuition/fees until your aid has been dispersed.
- Once your enrollment has been confirmed and the UMass Boston add/drop period has passed, your financial aid will be disbursed.
- Make arrangements with the Bursar's office for the disbursement of your check(s) - or enroll in Direct deposit. Direct Deposit is highly recommended to expedite the release of your financial aid.
