Building Hours

Campus buildings and outdoor spaces close by 11 p.m. Buildings generally begin opening at 6 a.m. and outdoor spaces at 7 a.m. Buildings or spaces may have earlier closing or later opening times or restrictions, even for authorized individuals.

University Hall: Emergency Lockdown System

In University Hall the Emergency Lockdown Buttons are located throughout the building in classrooms and auditoriums. To learn more about what to do during an active threat on-campus please visit the Emergency Management and Business Continuity page.    

Blue Light Phones

Indoor emergency phones are placed in yellow wall-mounted boxes to make them easy to spot. Outdoor emergency phones are located throughout campus, on stand-alone poles, and have a blue light above them for easy identification. These phones can be used for calling the Police Department for emergency situations, to report suspicious activity, or crimes in progress. These emergency phones feature direct speed calling button (marked in red) with an automatic identifier so that the Communications Dispatcher will know your locations when the call is answered. When getting acquainted with the campus, try to note the locations of these phones. If you accidentally press the call button, Stay on the line and talk to the dispatcher. Explain it was an accident, answer their questions that they have to ask for documentation.

If you accidentally dial 911 or press the call button (red button) on an emergency phone, don’t hang up. If you call 911, as soon as you hit the call button the call will be completed no matter how fast you hang up. Once you enter into the 911 system, you can’t get out until a dispatcher answers the call. Always stay on the line and talk to the dispatcher. Explain it was an accident, answer their questions that they have to ask for documentation.

CCTV 

UMass Boston maintains a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) program to support the safety, security, and well-being of the campus community in a professional and ethical manner. Since 2003, CCTV has been deployed in strategic locations at UMass Boston to assist emergency response efforts, help deter criminal activity, support investigations of incidents, and aid in the protection of individuals, property, and University assets.  The system records video but does not record audio.

CCTV recordings are maintained within secure University-approved systems on a set retention schedule, subject to circumstances that may require recordings to be preserved for a longer period.

Access to CCTV viewing and recordings is limited to appropriate public safety, investigative, operational, legal, or technical need. Access is subject to university authorization and security controls.

The CCTV program is overseen by Student Affairs Technology Services and is advised by the University Video Security and Access Control Committee (VSACC).
