Unlock possibilities for students with deafblindness.

UMass Boston’s Deafblind Graduate Certificate program, one of four of its kind in the country, is designed to help every student thrive. Created for educators, paraeducators, and related service providers seeking to expand their expertise, this certificate will help you transform the educational experience for students with deafblindness.

Developed alongside the New England Consortium on Deafblindness and the Institute for Community Inclusion, and in partnership with the Helen Keller National Center, this certificate offers five specialized courses focused on inclusive, culturally responsive practices and the use of assistive technology. You’ll be prepared to meet the growing demand for professionals at the forefront of inclusive education and to assess, teach, and advocate for this uniquely underserved community.

How to Apply

In addition to the criteria listed below, applicants must also meet general graduate admission requirements.

  • Transcripts. Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. A 3.0 undergraduate GPA is required.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation. Emphasis should be on academic and professional references.
  • Statement of Interest and Intent (Required Writing Sample). Submit a two-part essay:
    • Explain your reasons for wishing to pursue graduate studies (approximately 300 words).
    • Indicate your specific interest in deafblindness, and discuss the type of work you would be a good teacher of students with deafblindness (at least 1,200 words).
    • This statement will be reviewed for both your overall message and your ability to write at the graduate level. Proofread your writing carefully; it is ranked according to its clarity, grammar, and syntax.
