Immunizations & Screening Requirements

How to Submit Your Immunization Documents

University policy and Massachusetts Immunization Laws 105 CMR 220.00 and 105 CMR 220.600 require all full-time undergraduate and graduate students under 30 years of age** and all full-time and part-time Health Science and International Students (including Visiting Scholars and Foreign Exchange Students) to be immunized. However, we recommend all students be immunized in order to prevent outbreaks. Students must provide proof of immunization compliance before the start of classes. Failure to submit proof of immunizations will result in an academic hold.

**12 credits or more = full-time undergraduate; 9 credits or more = full-time graduate

College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) students will have additional requirements and not all exemptions apply.

Residential students are required to satisfy all screening and immunization requirements regardless of age or credits prior to moving in.

Guidelines for Immunizations and Screenings

Immunizations and Screenings Required for ALL Students (regardless of age or credits)

Tuberculosis (TB) Screening Questionnaire: All UMass Boston students are required to complete the web-based questionnaire by logging on to the MyHealthBeacon Portal. For instructions on accessing the form, read more here

  • In addition to completing the TB questionnaire, some international students will be required to test after entering the US. Students coming from a high-risk country will be required to test for tuberculosis or submit documentation of a test administered after entry into the United States. UHS strongly recommends that students who are coming from a high-risk country have a test administered within 3 months from the anticipated date of entry into the United States. The U.S. Immigration Services may require testing for certain countries and students are encouraged to submit these documents.

There are two forms of testing that we accept:

A chest x-ray is not an acceptable test for TB. A chest x-ray is only required if someone tests positive.

Students who test positive for TB must be evaluated by a Health care provider and cleared for travel. Please have your healthcare provider complete the TB Clearance Form.

Students with a history of a positive TB test should not be retested. Please have your healthcare provider complete the TB Clearance Form.

Immunizations Required for Full-Time Undergraduate and Graduate Students (under age 30), International Students, Health Sciences Students, and/or Visiting Scholars

The requirements below are in addition to the all-student requirements listed above.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

  • HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is so common that nearly all sexually active individuals get it at some point. There are many different types of HPV. Some types can cause health problems, such as genital warts and cancers.
  • The HPV vaccine is safe and effective and can protect males and females against diseases (including cancers) caused by the Human Papillomavirus.

COVID-19 Updated Vaccine

  • UMass Boston strongly recommends all students receive an updated COVID-19 dose when eligible.

All required immunizations can be obtained off-campus by a provider of choice or at University Health Services.

Exemptions from Requirements

Students attending UMass Boston may request an exemption from any immunization requirement, subject to religious and disability accommodations pursuant to state and federal law.

An exemption cannot be submitted for the Tuberculosis (TB) Screening Questionnaire, as all students must complete this web-based questionnaire on the My Health Beacon Portal.
