Cross-listing Guidelines
A cross-listed course is a single course that is offered under multiple subjects. For example, ASAMST 238L and PSYCH 238L, Asian American Psychology, are exactly the same course. They have the same title, course description, credit hours, etc. The course number of a cross-listed course has an “L” appended to the number to indicate that it is cross-listed.
A single course can be cross-listed with up to two additional departments (three total). Cross-listed course must have exactly the same number in every department. This means that courses cannot be cross-listed at different levels (for example, ASAMST 238 and PSYCH 338 is not possible). Courses also cannot be cross-listed between undergraduate and graduate levels, even in the same department (for example CHEM 404 and CHEM 604 is not possible). It is possible, however, to offer simultaneous undergraduate/graduate courses. Please see how to propose a simultaneous undergraduate-graduate course if you are interested in doing this.
For new courses, cross-listings can be added on the new course form (uc3 or gc3) in Curriculog.
For existing courses, cross-listing constitutes a substantial program change, so faculty should complete form uc1 or gc1 in Curriculog.
For all proposals that involve cross-listing faculty need to upload the following additional documents:
- A rationale for the cross-listing that explains how the cross-listed course serves the program and the students in the department seeking the cross-listing (for new courses, this can be included as a section in the new course rationale)
- Evidence that the original department approves the cross-listing (usually an email indicating approval)
- A brief statement outlining the specific stipulations attached to the cross-listing, such as:
- Consultation between departments regarding scheduling; mode of instruction (seminar, large enrollment, or online); specific syllabi or assignments in a given semester
- Whether and how departments will trade off the instructor of record
- How seats will be divided and counted
