University of Massachusetts Boston Department of Performing Arts

Performing Arts Department

The Performing Arts at UMass Boston includes majors in Music and Theater Arts, and a minor in Dance, and opportunities for all students on stage and behind the scenes. With more than 20 performances throughout the academic year, Performing Arts is a cultural center of the campus, and the community.

The Performing Arts hosts performances in our Recital Hall and Blackbox theater – both boasting state-of-the-art technology -- including our 40-piece UMass Boston Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles, University Choruses, annual Dance Concert, and Theatre Arts productions. Each is open to students of all majors, including backstage opportunities, with auditions at the start of each semester.

Music majors, and minors, engage in a comprehensive education in preparation for careers in music and teaching. Theatre Arts majors, and minors, train in acting, design and technology, directing, theatre history, and playwriting. Dance minors performance and choreographic opportunities, with a focus on understanding dance from historical and world perspectives.

The Performing Arts Department also offers one-on-one music instruction in a range of instruments and voice, at all levels of experience, including beginners, with world-class faculty.
